Key Club's History
As the largest and oldest high school service organization in the world, Key Club has a rich and proud history spanning decades. It all began in 1925, when two members of the Sacramento Kiwanis Club decided to start a high school service organization modeled after their club. Their first meeting was held in May of 1925, and Key Club was born. Word spread around the country about this program, and other Kiwanis Clubs eagerly wanted to implement their own Key Clubs. Soon after, Florida formed the first district in Key Club history, and Malcolm Lewis was elected as the first International President.
Since these humble beginnings, Key Club has grown and evolved greatly. In 1967, the first Key Club international club was chartered in Nassau, Bahamas. In 1977, female students were finally included in joining Key Club. Several benchmarks continued to be seen as Michelle McMillen became the first female president in 1991, and Key Club International launched its first website in 1997. Today, Key Club has more than 275,000 members in 30 countries all around the world!
However, one aspect of Key Club has not changed: its dedication to teaching youth about the power of service. Key Club always has, and will continue to, make a difference in communities across the globe.
