Key Club History

As the largest and oldest high school service organization in the world, Key Club has a rich and proud history spanning the past decades. In 1925, two members of the Sacramento Kiwanis Club came up with the idea to start a high school service organization, modeled after their club. Their first meeting was held in May 1925, and Key Club was born.  Word spread around the country about this program, and other Kiwanis Clubs eagerly wanted to implement their own Key Clubs. Soon after, Florida formed the first district in Key Club history, and Malcolm Lewis was elected as the first International President.

Since these humble beginnings, Key Club has grown and with 1,000 clubs chartered in 1952. thousands of additional clubs chartered. In 1967, the first Key Club internationally was chartered at Nassau, Bahamas, and female students finally were allowed to join Key Club in 1977. Several benchmarks continued to be seen as Michelle McMillen became the first female president in 1991, and the Key Club International launched it's first website 1997. Today, are more than 275,000 members in Key Club members in 30 countries all around the world!

One thing, however, has not changed. Just as it was in the beginning, Key Club is dedicated to teaching the youth of today about the lover of service that Key Club aims to create. It has, and will continue to, change lives all over the world and make a difference in communities across the globe.
